My wife (Kim) and I (Barry) are starting a small 3.5 barrel brewery in the Spokane County, Washington area. We are doing this all on our own, with a little help from our friends.
First, let me tell you a little about my brewing experience. It all started a little over ten years ago when I took a class on liqueurs from the city parks department. The class was held at a local home brew store and lasted just a couple of hours. We learned how to make some great liqueurs, some of which I still make today. However, I was most intrigued by the thought of making beer. Making beer was all I could think of. Then, for Christmas that year, Kim bought me a beer making kit and I was hooked.
Since that first kit ten years ago, I have progressed to where I am today. It took only a few batches to realize that making beer from extract kits in my kitchen wasn’t going to do. With each new batch, I gained knowledge through every source possible and have created some great beer that has been fabulously received by friends and strangers alike.
Along the way I have provided beer for several weddings, tasting parties, and other family events. Last year, I placed fourth in Spokane’s Battle of the Homebrews competition out of 50 brewers with my Vanilla Porter. I have showcased my beer during Downtown Spokane’s First Friday at the Numerica Credit Union branch. From that event, I was asked to provide beer to the Washington Dental Society’s annual fundraiser, Pop a Cork for a Cause that has been serving up only wine until this year. I was able to serve beer alongside Orlison Brewing Company and Black Label Brewing Company. Wow! What an honor! Presently, I am getting ready to serve up two beers at the 2015 Battle of the Homebrew competition coming up on May 16th 2015.
Opening a brewery is any home brewers dream. Twenty-three years ago when Kim and I first met, we talked and dreamed of someday opening a business and now we’ve found something we both have a passion for that we can build together. I am excited to fulfill this dream of ours while we do something to bring enjoyment to others.
We hope to move quickly to have beer in your hands as soon as possible. At this point, we are negotiating a building lease and from there we know we have many obstacles to overcome, but we’re up for the challenge. We will keep you posted on our progress.
